Much of this discussion should be grounded in the core values that are set through the Identity and Values meetings. | | | | posted by: Dave James | 27-09-2007 | | The morning session that presented data about UNLV's current status in terms of enrollments, staffing, space and funding was very useful. Could the follow up Town Hall meetings address the Challenge questions? | | | | posted by: Amanda Owens | 04-10-2007 | | Retention, and graduation are important areas that are ongoing concern. The University can improve in both areas by simplifying the paper and registration procecess, improving the parking situation instead of decreasing spaces everytime a new building is built, I suggest everytime you build parking should be attached to the building. They could either build the spaces for parking on top of the building or underneath. Also, my favorite is the Shuttle (The Ride)that rides around empty all day and students, faulty, and staff are walking. This should be a signal a red flag that the route chosen is not the one needed by most. In fact, when you ask the driver do you go in a particular direction. The driver always says no. I hope someone will look into the Shuttle Service. The final area is that of a much needed customer service student focus institution. Being nice to our students, and employees so that we can provide the students with the answers they need, quality service. None of the above mention are costly, but it will provide a great student experience at UNLV. These areas will improve Retention, Graduation, and increase enrollment. | | | | posted by: Dave James | 11-10-2007 | | On September 7, UNLV hosted a day-long retreat "Learning for Success in the 21st Century" that brought together students, faculty and employers to develop a set of universal outcomes that characterize a successful/desirable 21st century college graduate. Generally-agreed outcomes included abilities to communicate effectively, use information resources effectively, reason critically and quantitatively, work in teams, function in a democratic society, and understand global diversity. Working groups will develop these outcomes into a set of curricular recommendations that will be presented to the campus in Spring of 2008. Reform of General Education to create an innovative curriculum that will be relevant to the long-term success of UNLV's graduates could be a key part of the University's Focus 50-100 effort in Education, especially if we are able to create a curriculum that gives students compelling reasons to select UNLV as their institution of higher education. | | | | posted by: Dave James | 16-11-2007 | | It was pleasing to see the Education town hall meetings develop a set of universal outcomes for college graduates that will provide direction for UNLV as it develops state-of-the-art curricula that will contribute to preparing graduates for professional and personal success. We look forward to incorporating the Education town hall recommendations into current efforts to re-envision and re-design General Education at UNLV. | | |
