Institutional Overview

This opening session is intended to achieve a common understanding among all UNLV constituents of the university's past and present.   We are hoping that a more realistic basis for understanding and defining the university’s future will be established.

The information presented included a common data set to provide a shared historical institutional context; the performance measures used to determine UNLV’s current standing; comparisons of UNLV to aspirant institutions; and, a focused presentation on UNLV’s current and future fiscal status.

Panel Discussions

To address the issues necessary to accomplish the major goal of the planning process, four panel discussions will be presented.  The topics for the panel are:

  1. Identification of institutional identities and values
  2. Formulation of UNLV’s educational mission based on its identity
  3. Growth of UNLV’s interdisciplinary research driven by its identity
  4. Resolution of the UNLV infrastructure challenges in support of the achievement of institutional goals.

Each panel will be comprised of UNLV students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community members.  They will be asked to provide their thoughts on a series of initial challenge questions regarding the respective panel topic, based on the information provided in the Institutional Overview presentation.  Additional challenge questions to help frame the planning process are expected to be generated from the panel discussions.

Initial Challenge Questions

  • What identities and values will we have as we go forward?
  • How do we manage enrollment and admissions?
  • How do we promote student success?
  • What qualifications should a UNLV graduate have?
  • What role do we play in service to the community around us?
  • What is our identity?
  • How does our identity inform our educational and research mission?
  • What are the infrastructure challenges we face?
  • What are the barriers to achieving our educational goals?
  • How do we build trans-disciplinary programs?
  • How do we improve the diversity of our campus?
  • How do we structure our research?
  • How will we organize the planning process?

Steering Committees/Town Hall Meetings

The information and outcomes from the four panel discussions will provide the basis for the subsequent town hall meetings.  Four steering committees on each respective panel topic will be convened to broadly engage the university and greater Las Vegas community in these town hall discussions.  The last scheduled meeting for each topic will also serve as the wrap-up/summary session for the respective topic.

Comprised of various internal and external stakeholders, the meetings will solicit input on UNLV’s future directions and ideas about how the university will implement its plan.
