One of the interdisciplinary missions of UNLV is to develop the expertise in different depts. to become a leading insititution in the region/nation in the area of energy conservation/renewables due to our situation in a fast growing arid region with very few resources be it energy or water.
SM | | | | posted by: Ron Gary | 16-11-2007 | In my opinion, the single most cost-effective way to improve research productivity at UNLV would be to increase the number of state-funded graduate assistantships, and increase the GA stipend in those fields (such as science) in which a higher stipend is needed to be competitive with other schools in recruiting top students. Research grants can and do fund GA's, but external grants alone cannot satisfy the need for GA's. Grants typically have durations of one, two, or three years, whereas doctoral students require continuous support for four or more years, so even well-funded labs will occasionally need state GA's to maintain continuity of the research program. GA's provide badly needed teaching support and absolutely essential research support, yet require relatively modest funds compared to any other personnel expenditure on campus. Well-qualified grad students are the lifeblood of our research programs, yet often we cannot accept such applicants due to the lack of funding for GA's. I was very disappointed to learn that the Nevada STARS Graduate Assistantship program, begun in 2006 to help recruit the highest caliber grad students to UNLV, had to be discontinued after only one year (!!!) due to budget cuts.

Innovation in educational practices can be a viable research field for all disciplines. Funding is available from NSF to improve teaching and learning, and there are respected refereed journals that accept scholarly articles that communicate the results of education reform. Incorporating research into the undergraduate classroom, and undergraduate students in research, can enhance the student learning. National funding is available to support placing undergraduate students into research laboratories, and UNLV has been successful in obtaining these funds in the past! | | |
